The Niederösterrich region is Austria’s largest Qualitätswein wine growing region producing some of the finest white wines in the world and is one of the best places to visit in Austria, for the scenery, landscapes, culture, gastronomy and of course the fabulous Austrian wines.

It is a vast region and we will be visiting just three adjacent world famous wine regions which make the finest wines in Austria, Wachau DAC, Kremstal DAC and Kamptal DAC.

In the Kremstel region there are 2370 hectares of vines, composed of approximately 60% Grüner Veltliner, 11% Riesling and 11% Zweigelt. The Krems Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in Austria where vineyards have flourished for centuries. According to the wine law, a Kremstel wine must be monovarietal, must be produced from 85% Kremstel vineyards and have been vinified and bottled in the Kremstel.

The Kamptal along the Kamp river has 3,802 hectares of vineyards making it one of the largest and most successful wine regions in the country. Traditionally considered to be one of the best locations for Riesling in the world and with some internationally renowned wine makers, the region also has remarkable elegant reds, such as Zweigelt and Pinot Noir.

The Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is Lower Austria’s most famous wine region located in the Danube valley with breathtaking rolling hills, medieval ruins and magnificent monasteries.  With just 1350 hectares of vineyards planted with predominantly white grape varieties, mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the first vines were planted by the Romans, with the vineyards adjacent to the river being cultivated by monks from the 10th Century. Since the 2020 vintage, wines are produced in three categories; Gebietswein (regional wine), Ortswein ( “villages” wine and Riedenwein (single-vineyard wine), recognised with the protected designation of origin, Wachau DAC. One special feature of Wachau DAC wines is that the grapes used must be harvested by hand.

Our home for five nights will be the Loisium Wine and Spa resort in Langenlois, the Kamptal’s principal town and a town that produces more wine than any other in Austria.

The spacious Superior rooms are set amongst the vineyards, so you can relax on your balcony with a glass of wine and a vineyard view.

The hotel combines traditional wine history, modern lifestyle and elements of the surrounding nature in its unique design by star architect Steven Holl.

The Spa Club boasts a heated outdoor pool and a swimming pond, sauna and Wine Treatments. If you would like more winery visits, during free time you can visit the 900 year old labyrinth of wine cellars, Vinotheque and tasting room at the hotel with your own personal interactive audio guide.

Enjoy and explore the vineyards on foot or by bike. There are bike rentals at the hotel and many hiking trails, also restaurants and wine bars in walking distance.

We will be visiting Weingut Nigl, one of the top producers in Kremstel. Martin Nigl is a passionate winemaker producing the most authentic and top quality wines from grapes cultivated in some of the best vineyards in Kremstel. The winery and hotel is located high in the Krems Valley at the foot of the Senftemberg Castle ruins. The winery building dates back to the 12th Century, renovated by the Nigl family in 1994. Lunch in the fine dining restaurant in the garden, weather permitting, will follow a tasting from this traditional winery

Schloss Gobelsburg is one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries and castle in the Kamptal region. The Cistercian monks introduced vines as far back as 1171. With 40 hectares of vines, winemaking takes place in the ancient cellars under the castle, mostly in large old wooden vats made from local oak, with minimal intervention.

Here we will learn about the history and rich traditions of the winery, as well as of the mansion itself. Then we will see the cellars including the 700 year old vinotheque archive and the newly built cloister cellar in monastic style. We can enjoy the view into the valley of the Kamptal from the upper garden before tasting the wines.

Close to the hotel in the historic town of Langenlois in the Kamptal region is Heurigenhof Bründlmayor, a Renaissance farm originally built in 1140.

Willi Bründlmayor is widely recognised as one of Austria’s gifted winemakers. We will taste the fabulous wines with a lunch or dinner of multiple award winning cuisine focused on regional produce in a symbiosis of outstanding wines and fine dining.

FX Pichler is a family run winery and one of the world’s foremost producers of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. It has been one of the leading names in the Austrian wine scene for decades. The Estate developed a reputation as a Grüner Veltliner specialist and was once described by Robert Parker as the “Château Latour, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Zind-Humbrecht, Sandrone and Helen Turley of the Wachau”. FX Pichler owns 22hectares of vineyards, almost half are planted on steep terraces.

Our visit to the winery is subject to the progress of the harvest which typically takes place in September and can extend into November. This can be affected by weather conditions and for prestigious wineries such as FX Pichler, they may be engrossed in producing ultimate quality wines so they are unable to confirm our visit until they know more about the timing of the harvest. Of course we will work with them and keep everything crossed as a tasting of these superb wines would be fabulous. We will have alternatives in mind if needed.

These are some of the visits we have planned and there are many more to be confirmed, including visits to very small family-run wineries.

There will also be a fabulous 7 course wine-paired, Michelin-starred dinner in Vienna to look forward to.

We will visit two wineries each day with free time in the mornings or evenings.
