ABOUT
Join us in southern Italy for a unique wine tour in the 'heel of Italy's boot' - Puglia! Look forward to white, rosé and red wines produced from grapes indigenous to the region.
For decades Puglia was known as Europe’s wine cellar, producing massive quantities of grapes used to blend into thinner Northern wines. Today, that narrative has reversed! Puglia is now a powerhouse of bold, sun-drenched, and characterful reds that offer some of the best value-to-quality ratios in Italy.
Look forward to vineyard and winery tours and tastings where you'll see behind the scenes at wineries and taste some incredible Puglian wines from both large producers and small, family owned and run vineyards as well as exciting food and wine experiences, Michelin star dining and much, much more!
More about Puglia and it's wines:
While Puglia grows many varieties, these three define the region's identity:
Primitivo (known in the USA as Zinfandel) Bold & Jammy. Expect high alcohol from the sun of southern Italy, blackberry and dark chocolate notes. The best examples are produced in Manduria.
Negroamaro Earthy & Rustic, the name means 'black bitter' - it’s savory, with flavours of baked plum, dried herbs, and a slightly medicinal (in a good way!) finish
Nero di Troia Elegant & Tannic, found mostly in the north of the region. It’s more floral (violets) and structured than the other two, often described as the aristocrat of Puglia and not as widely available in the UK as Primitivo and Negroamaro.
Puglia is a long, thin peninsula and the terroir varies significantly from the hilly north to the flat, sea-breeze-cooled south.
Salento Peninsula This is the southern tip. The flat landscape and constant Mediterranean breeze create the perfect environment for Negroamaro and Primitivo. This is where you find the famous Salice Salentino.
Manduria Located in the Taranto province, this is the 'Grand Cru' site for Primitivo. The iron-rich red soils produce wines that are incredibly concentrated and velvety.
Castel del Monte In the north, near Bari. This area is higher in elevation and cooler, producing more refined reds (Nero di Troia) and surprisingly crisp rosés.
Some Puglia wine region facts:
Puglia produces some of Italy’s best rosé wines, primarily from Negroamaro. They are deeper in colour and more flavourful than the pale Provençal style. The region is famous for Alberello (bush vines). These gnarled, ancient vines produce low yields but incredible flavour intensity. You can often find a world-class bottle of Salice Salentino or Primitivo for a fraction of the price of a Barolo or Brunello. Who doesn't love an affordable wine gem?!
